Seshego protests: police arrest six for business looting, damage to property

Six suspects arrested in connection with the looting of several shops during the violent protests in Seshego on Friday, will appear today (Monday) before the Seshego Magistrate's Court.

POLOKWANE – The protests started on Friday morning when protesters barricaded routes leading to the city, according to Police Spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe. “At some point, police had to disperse groups of people blocking the Nelson Mandela Drive, the old Polokwane/Seshego road and the Seshego Round-about (circle).”

“The violence escalated and people looted several shops and spaza shops, including the KFC outlet at the local mall. A half truck belonging to a businessman was also torched at Seshego Zone 2,” he added.

“On Friday evening suspects broke into a sports apparel shop and looted some items. They then attempted to break into a clothing store but the police arrived in time and the suspects fled into the darkness.”

These arrests and subsequent court appearance should send a clear message that the South African Police Service will act decisively when dealing with criminal elements taking advantage of protests. As much as people have the right to protest, this must be done within the dictates of the law.

The six suspects aged between 18 and 49-years-old face charges of housebreaking business and malicious damage to property.
