Mob assaults, burns alive robbery suspects near Lebowakgomo

The Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, has condemned the brutal mob killing of two people and attempted killing of two others in an incident that occurred yesterday (Tuesday)

LIMPOPO – This comes after a business man was allegedly attacked and robbed of an undisclosed amount of money, cigarettes and airtime by an unknown number of armed robbers in Ga-Kgwete village in the Mecklenburg Policing area outside Lebowakgomo, according to Police Spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

“The robbers fled in two separate vehicles, followed by a number of community members. Amid their getaway, the robbers shot at the people pursuing them, wounding two, but this did not deter the group.

The two deceased have been identified as Sethathi Aron Matemane (39) from Daveyton in the Gauteng Province and Happy Jacky Dots (32) from Dennilton outside Burgersfort.

Two counts of attempted murder and two counts of murder have been opened.

No arrests have been made and police investigations continue.

Lt. Ledwaba reiterated his call to all members of the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands by attacking and killing people they suspect to have committed crimes.

“We are calling on all community members to desist from acts of vigilantism and the so-called mob justice. The police will act mercilessly against anyone who participates in these violent activities,” Lt. Ledwaba said. He continued, stating the police must be given the space to investigate any alleged offense.
