Two arrested in Vuwani following unrest

Police were deployed to Vuwani this morning after violence erupted over the weekend over municipal demarcation.

UPDATE: The two arrested suspects in this matter are due to appear before the Malamulele Magistrate Court outside Giyani this afternoon.

The suspects, Takalani Mulaudzi (29) and Thapelo Ngwana (26), arrested for malicious damage to property and incitement to commit public violence, were given R500 bail each with conditions.

These conditions include not to interfere with investigations and with witnesses. They are set to reappear before the same court on 31 May.

Police spokesperson Lt Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe says the situation in Vuwani is relatively quiet with no reported incidents except the sporadic throwing of stones to the passing cars.

“This was addressed immediately through prompt reaction by the police,” he concluded.

LIMPOPO – Two suspects aged 26 and 29 were arrested for malicious damage to property and incitement to commit public violence after passing motorists were stoned along local roads.

Last week, local community leaders in Vuwani allegedly called for the community to mobilise and embark on a protest allegedly in-relation to demarcation concerns.

Police spokesperson Lt Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe says the community wanted to have a meeting on Sunday (2 April) at Nandoni sports field, without following the relevant prescripts of the South African Gathering Act and as a result, the police had to cancel it because it was going to be an illegal meeting.

“The Police may not stop or cancel any community mass gathering, as long as it is in compliance with this the South African Gathering Act,” explained Ngoepe.
