Prevent scams and fraud with these helpful tips

The Mokopane Police give the following tips on how to protect yourself and your family against theft, scams and bank account and online fraud.

MOKOPANE –

• Only provide your credit card details to reputable companies.

• If it looks too good to be true, it usually is.

• Regularly request bank statement to check your balances and transactions.

• Never send money or give credit card or online account details to anyone.

Check for the following things when buying online:

• Does the company have a legit website.

• Does there appear landline contact numbers and call this numbers to see if they are legit.

• Google search the company and the brand they are selling, you will pickup any fraudulent transactions and dissatisfied customer reports and comments on the internet.

• Make sure when you buy from foreign countries that it is legit.

• Never provide your online ID, password or pin to anyone and never write them down or share them.

• Do not save your internet banking password on your desktop or on your cell phone under your contacts.

• Do not leave your computer unattended after you have entered your internet banking password.

• Always log off or sign off at the end of a session.

• Avoid doing internet banking in public areas such as internet cafes, or on any computer that can be accessed by people you do not know.

• Change your pin and passwords frequently.

• Put sensible transaction limits on your accounts.

Never respond to e-mails or cell phone messages appearing to be from your bank, which request your personal details. Remember that no bank will ever ask you to confirm or update your account details via e-mail.
