Learners have the right to_______?

Review recently visited Bet-Shalom Christian School where we spoke to learners from Gr R to Gr 4 asking them what they know about their Human Rights and their thoughts on them.

POLOKWANE – Human Rights Day is one of the most important public holidays in the country, highlighting the sacrifices that accompanied the struggle for the attainment of democracy in South Africa.

While every child is taught about their basic human rights at school, it is still important for them to know why this day is celebrated across the country.

With this in mind, Review recently visited Bet-Shalom Christian School where we spoke to learners from Gr R to Gr 4 asking them what they know about their Human Rights and their thoughts on them.

Reuben Van Zyl in Gr 4 says he knows what Human Rights is. “I have the right to do things according to my age, not something that’s older than my age, otherwise it’s child labour,” he said.

Chante Nagel in Gr 3 – “I have the right to play with my friends, and I also have the right to play in my free time,” she said.

Bonolo Lehuleni says she has the right to education because her parents pay school fees every year for her to be able to come to school every day.

Shemiamah Moila says he does not know what Human Rights are, but he is willing to learn in class on what Human Rights is all about.
