Man (54) convicted of illegal cigarette smuggling

Carel Frederick Roos (54) was arrested in July 2015

LIMPOPO- Carel Frederick Roos (54) was convicted by Mankweng Regional Court on 13 March for smuggling illicit cigarettes and fined R15 000 or three years imprisonment.

According to a statement issued by Hawks Spokesperson, Capt Marimba Maluleke, Roos was arrested in July 2015 after the police received a tip off about a suspicious car along the Dendron (Mokwadi) road. “They immediately acted on the information and spotted the said car and stopped and searched it. During the search 2 339 cartoons of Derby illicit cigarettes worth R300 000 were found and he was arrested,” said Maluleke.

“The accused was granted bail during his trial,” he added.

Successful convictions and hefty sentences imposed on illegal cigarettes smugglers will minimise the number of illicit cigarettes smuggled into the country. We appreciate the involvement of community members in fighting crime and we encourage them to continue giving information to the police.
