New school opens in Tzaneen

Martie Fourie and Helen Beling recently opened Little Learners Academy in Tzaneen.

LIMPOPO –  It is situated down a quiet leafy, unmarked but multi-signed bricked road, at the side of the Catholic Church.

Helen taught home schooling prior to opening Little Learners Academy. The women worked side-by-side and in two months painted and repaired the building that comprises classrooms and a reading room, all tastefully yet practically furnished. They also built the fence around the school as well as the gate, numbered 58. Martie ran Forest Hill School in Haenertsburg for eight years and prior to that spent 13 years at King’s Court School in Modjadjiskloof.

Little Learners Academy offers classes from Grade R to Grade 7 but there are plans to take it up to high school level. The Academy has 28 children from 7:30 to 13:30 Mondays to Fridays. Aftercare is from Mondays to Thursdays offering extra classes for maths, Afrikaans, English and reading. There is a particular need for reading as parents who work are often too tired to read to their children.

The school is nestled between enormous old trees.

The academy also caters for children with special needs. It’s a Junk Free Zone school, however, junk food is allowed on Fridays. It teaches the children the difference between healthy and unhealthy food.

There are also fun activities with regular planned excursions or diversions. The Spur team visited last week and there is an upcoming visit to the Letaba Eco Lodge.
