Attempted poaching suspects appear in court

The three suspects appeared on a charge of attempted poaching, possession of poisonous substance and possession of dangerous weapons.

POLOKWANE – Three suspects aged 27, 36 and 55 respectively appeared before the Tzaneen magistrate court today.

Police Spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo says the three suspects were arrested last night after they allegedly cut the fence of the Letaba River Lodge Game Reserve and gained access to the premises.

“The suspects were confronted by security guards who then called the police. They were found in possession of poisoned chicken, a garden cutter and a kitchen knife,” he said.

Mojapelo says one of the suspects is an employee of the Letaba River Lodge Game Reserve.

Three lions were killed at the same game reserve in the past two months and their heads and paws were removed.

“These arrests will bring us closer to solving some of similar cases that afflicted this provide in the past,” said Mojapelo.
