[WATCH] Felled eucalyptus trees removed

Municipal workers tasked with removing the tree said they were instructed to chop down the tree as they consumed too much water.

POLOKWANE – Last week, residents of Mark Street witnessed the removal of a massive eucalyptus tree that grew on the banks of a stream in close proximity to the street.

Municipal workers tasked with removing the tree said they were instructed to chop down the tree, along with others in the vicinity, as they consumed too much water.

“The tree’s roots run deep into the ground and consumes a large quantity of water. We don’t know how old it is and we will only be able to determine the age once it has been chopped down and we can count its rings. I reckon it is approximately 1,5 m wide,” one of the workers explained. He asked to remain anonymous as he is not allowed to address the media.

“We’ve been instructed to remove all the trees in this area. It is also a method to clean the stream. The wood garnered from these trees are strong and most commonly used to build support structures in mines,” he continued.

Andries Beyer told Review his family has lived in the area for more than 40 years and the tree was there when they first moved in.

Eucalyptus trees are catergorised as alien trees.

The Polokwane Municipality could not comment on the matter.
