LIMPOPO – The mother, who cannot be named as it will identify her son, told CV her son attended Elim High School when he was expelled due to a personal disagreement between himself and the teacher.
“According to my understanding a child cannot be expelled from the school without a proper hearing which include the School Governing Body (SGB) and parents.
“If my son was misbehaving like they claim, they should have called a hearing first before they expelled him to investigate the matter,” she said.
She said the expulsion was done without following proper protocol and although her son is enrolled in another school to continue his studies, the matter will not go unaddressed.
The principal of the school, Tshiwela Mavuna, called her and her son in for a meeting at the school after which her son was allowed back at school, she said.
However, this she said was short lived as when her son returned to the school, some of the teachers refused to teach while he was in the classroom.
She said her son is now enrolled in Vhudzani Secondary School where he resumed classes.
Asked for comment, Mavuna, said the matter was being investigated by the Department of Education, thus she could not comment on the matter.
Education Spokesperson, Dr Naledzani Rasila, outlined the proper procedure.
“Teachers are not allowed to expel any child from the school, only the principal and SGB can do that.
“We will investigate the matter and take it forward. It should be kept in mind it is not our responsibility as the department to ensure learners behave at school, that is the sole responsibility of the parents.”
