POLOKWANE – The members of the campaign realised that because they cannot afford sanitary products, girls, especially in villages, skip school when they are on their menstrual cycle.
The campaign donates sanitary pads to girls in schools around Polokwane and surrounding areas. Beneficiaries of the campaign include Westenburg High School and Mapelwane High School in Turfloof, Ga-Molepo.
“We donated 100’s of sanitary pads at high schools and the girls were so happy and excited when they received the packs,” says Jamaima Buys, founder of Share If We Care.
According to Jamaima, there are six members that form part of the campaign. She says they are all work full time but make time for Share If We Care.
Democratic Alliance (DA) Leader Jacques Smalle says they were more than happy to assist the group with funds. “We have offered the Share If We Care charity campaign ± R12 000, where they were able to buy 1000’s of sanitary pads for school learners around Polokwane, and maybe keep some for more schools around Limpopo,” Smalle said.
One of the learners who received a sanitary care package said she used to stay home and miss class when she was on her period because her parents could not afford to buy her sanitary pads. “Now I can be free to go to school any day I want, even when I am on my period, and I am very grateful for Share If We Care,” she said.
Jamaima says the aim of their campaign is to donate sanitary pads continuously, something they hope to implement on a monthly basis.
