Sewage concern resolved

During an inspection, a technician determined that the source of the leaking sewage was not at Divine Estate, but at the neighbouring Parliamentary Village.

POLOKWANE- Residents of Divine Estate in Bendor has had a problem with the smell of sewage hanging over the estate, with some residents even having to deal with sewage seeping into their yards.

The matter was reported to the municipality who initially did not find anything amiss during their investigations.

However, during one of the inspections, the technician determined that the source of the leaking sewage was not at Divine Estate, but at the neighbouring Parliamentary Village. The technician also concluded that it was not a municipal problem and referred the matter to the Department of Public Works to resolve.

The sewage soaked ground at Parliamentary Village was determined to be caused by a blockage in the municipal sewerage system.

Subsequently the Department of Public Works Spokesperson, Paena Galane, as well as plumbers, and the resident and facility managers of Parliamentary Village visited the site to investigate the problem.

“Upon inspection it was determined that the cause was a blockage in the municipal sewerage system which runs through the area. The blockage caused the sewerage system to leak, soaking the ground which caused the strength of the wall between Divine Estate and Parliamentary Village to be compromised,” Galane explained.

After the findings the municipality was notified and investigated the matter again.

The piece of ground in Parliamentary Village looks like a swamp due to the sewage water seeping through to the surface due to a blocked sewerage system.

“We called the municipal technical team to show them the findings to assist them in making an informed determination of the problem at hand.

“This was done to help resolve the plight of the residents after it was determined that it was indeed a fault in the municipal infrastructure and not with ours. They made amends to the preliminary report and resolved the blocked sewerage system,” Galane added.

The department, however, will still have to assess and repair the damage done to the security wall between the two estates.

Municipal Spokesperson, Disree Manyane, said: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused and want to assure residents that we as the municipality will always try our best to resolve any sewerage concerns promptly”.
