Ironing out poverty’s creases
Owner of Polokwane Cleaning Ladies, Kulani, says his aim is to empower women in our nation and his company employs mostly women.
POLOKWANE – Kulani is a young professional man who is not blind to the need of others.
He took note of the many unemployed young women in our city and came up with a plan.
“I decided to start this business after realising the level of poverty suffered by young women.I saw them selling their bodies to get money to provide for their families. I also have a wife and I felt for them and decided to create an opportunity for them to earn money,” he says.
Kulani says his aim is to empower women in our nation and his company employs mostly women.
He started the business, Polokwane Cleaning Ladies, in June 2015 with only one worker.
He currently has 10 women who clean three times a week.
“They all come from different villages and I pick them up at the taxi rank every day after which I take them to the different locations where they clean.
He explained that the women who work for him are all younger than 30 and two of them have university degrees.
“Due to the prevalence of unemployment, they begged me to employ them as cleaning ladies, despite their qualifications. Some of the women I employ struggled to find employment for between three and five years, living without an income.”
He explained that the company provides cleaning materials and carries out background checks on every employee, phoning for references and finding out more about the employee.
“I also do spot checks where I have a checklist and they have to comply with it.
“I realised people want clean houses but do not have the time to do it themselves.
“I’m touched when women from disadvantaged backgrounds tell me I am changing their lives and they appreciate everything our company is achieving and the difference we are making in their lives.”
