POLOKWANWE – On average, more than 180 car accidents occur in the city every month, according to the Polokwane Municipality.
This worrying statistic has prompted officials to plead with motorists to drive responsibly.
Municipal Stakeholder and Relations Officer, Disree Manyane, says they will be looking to intensify law enforcement on the roads to help lower this number.
According to Manyane, the leading causes of these accidents include speeding, inexperienced drivers, general disregard for other motorists, non-roadworthy vehicles and drivers disobeying the road traffic signs and road markings.
It is because of motorists’ disregard that Manyane says the municipality will be looking to conduct more road safety awareness campaigns and enhance the visibility of officers in the city.
Motorists are asked to always stay vigilant, even if they drive a specific route daily. “Conditions can change in the blink of an eye and one should always be prepared for any emergency or unforeseen circumstances,” Manyane concluded.
