Keeping faith in your marriage

It takes more than just the romance of Valentine’s Day for young married couples to keep their love and respect for each other intact. Berron Fuhri gives insight

POLOKWANE – Valentine’s Day is around the corner, and for some people, especially married couples, is it the ideal opportunity to rekindle their love by spoiling each other with all kinds of gifts.

The guys will most likely treat the love of their life with a romantic dinner or flowers, jewellery, chocolates, perfume or even stuffed animals. The ladies will probably buy their loved ones a memorable CD, a good cologne, biltong baskets or something simple such as a nice jacket.

Well, this all sound too familiar, right?

The norm these days is that very few young married couples make the ten-year landmark of being happily married, in comparison with married couples who stuck together for decades. And Valentine’s Day alone could not salvage a marriage on the verge of failing. But what is the reason?

Review spoke to Berron Fuhri, part of the youth ministry at the Tabernadei church in Polokwane, to shed light on this phenom.

“Young couples get into marriage without realising at times what exactly it entails to become a happily married couple. Getting married is not that simple and couples must realise that in order for a marriage to be successful needs hard work from both parties,” Fuhri says.

According to Fuhri, married couples go through life without having the right tools to make their marriage last. He says the biggest strain on marriages these days is busy work schedules that leave little down time for people to spend time togetgher. That, and that couples don’t attend church together. Another factor is social media. If one person is flirting with someone outside the relationship on a social network, it is never innocent.

“I have seen statistics that the percentage of young married couples getting divorced is higher than of those who goes to church regularly. This tells me that by making more time for the Lord and coming to church more often would provide couples with the tools to make their marriage successful. People must never be too busy to make time for their Creator,” he continues.
