School traffic: Safety first

Review spoke to a couple of schools situated throughout the city of Polokwane to find out what different systems they currently have in place to ensure to safety of their learners.

POLOKWANE -Traffic has become an ever increasing problem for Polokwane as the city continues to grow more and more every day.

With schools also recently opening traffic has become a nightmare in the mornings and learners could be in some danger because of this increasing problem.

Review spoke to a couple of schools situated throughout the city of Polokwane to find out what different systems they currently have in place to ensure to safety of their learners.

Hoërskool Pietersburg, situated in Dorp Street where there is always flowing traffic, currently has different drop off blocks for each grade. Annamarie Schoeman, the school’s spokesperson, says there are two drop offs in Dorp Street and one in Hospital Street which is designed in such a way that there would be no traffic congestion. She says they also have a traffic official during the day to help children walk safely when leaving school.

Oosskool has multiple speed bumps in the busiest streets around their school to prevent any speeding and threats of accidents occurring.  Marlene Thompson, says the school also has road patrol in the afternoon, when learners are picked up from school and they had a traffic light erected to help children cross the road.

Noorderland, which is situated between Biccard and Hospital Streets, has a waiting area where parents can stop and pick up their children without the children having to cross the dangerous roads and put their lives at risk. Acting principal, Thabo Ratewa says the safety of the learners is of utmost importance to the school.

At Mitchell House, parents have to drive into the school area to drop off and pick up their children. Marketing Director at the school, Achsah Phoshoko says the school area also has a speed limit as well as multiple speed bumps to ensure the safety of their learners.
