Another rhino shot and dehorned at local reserve

[NOT FOR SENSITIVE VIEWERS] Another rhino was shot and dehorned shortly before New Year’s in the Polokwane Game Reserve

POLOKWANE – Shock and anguish were the feelings residents of the city expressed last year when reports surfaced that rhino poachers had gained entry to a popular game reserve in the province where they mutilated and dehorned several rhinos.

Within the first few days of the new year, a Review reader visiting the Polokwane Game Reserve came across a rhino which had been shot and dehorned. The gamekeeper was immediately informed of the incident.

According to Municipal Spokesperson, Matshidiso Motapo, this is a sensitive issue and they cannot, due to safety reasons, divulge any more information regarding the incident.

“We can confirm that the incident took place and the case has been handed over to the police and other relevant authorities for further investigation.

The municipality has been advised not to share any more information because of the safety concerns and sensitive nature of the case. Doing so could obstruct investigations,” stated Motapo.

There are currently only nine rhinos left at the reserve.
