Tips to help you pull off a great new year's dinner without spending too much cash

New Year’s is a time when friends and family get together and celebrate the end of a year and the beginning of a new one. Review caught up with Schalk Buchling from Kings Platter to find out if it is possible to host a New Year’s party without blowing your budget.
“The question is how can the host or hostess make a gathering special? Let’s say the average number of people that will get together are about 17 people and to fill every one up can be quite expensive. The first thing you must remember is that meat prices rise in December and January, starting as early as 25 November. The best meat to use is pork. Chicken and beef will be very expensive,” he explains.

Buchling says a starter of canape’s is a good way to start things off. It should be something light but filling.

“Upon arrival, serve a canape of French rolls with an easy to make topping,” he continues.

To make: Slice the French rolls, toast the slices and spread mayonnaise, sweet chilli or any spread of your choosing on the toast.

Now add the meat. this could be bacon, roasted beef of salmon.

Add something small to the top to round things off, such as an olive or cocktail tomato.

For dinner, Buchling says you should serve finger foods such as pork ribs, drumsticks, chicken wings or steak strips. With that you include a starch such as rice-balls, baby potatoes, jacket potatoes or chips.

“For desert, I would go big and serve something such as an alcoholic strawberry smoothie.”
