SAPS officer ‘fighting for his life’ after assault

The officer was assaulted in the city last night

CORRECTION:The attack happened on the evening of Monday 26 December.

POLOKWANE – The police have arrested a 31-year-old man for the severe assault of a 56-year-old Police Captain at around 19:11 last night (Tuesday).

The incident which happened in town on the R81 Modjadjieskloof road appeared to have started with  argument which led to the assault said Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.

“The captain lost several teeth during the assault and was flown to a hospital in Pretoria where he is currently fighting for his life. It is currently not known what the argument was about as the member is said to be still in a coma and therefore unable to speak,” he said.

According to reports the suspect, a male person aged 31-years-old, allegedly overpowered the officer, grabbed his official firearm and threatened to shoot him. Another passerby managed to grab the firearm from the suspect but he continued assaulting the member until he became unconscious.

Mojapelo added; “The police were called to the scene and the suspect was arrested and the police firearm recovered.

A charge of assault with grievous bodily harm has been laid. The suspect is likely to face additional charges in relation to the firearm and will appear in court soon, concluded Mojapelo.

“We condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms and we will ensure that the alleged attacker faces the full might of the law.”
