‘Farewell Good Hope’

After several wonderful years at Good Hope Primary School, one of its longtime teachers, Leonard Nkuna, is bidding a sad farewell as he heads into retirement.

POLOKWANE – Leonard became a teacher at the age of 21 and joined Good Hope as an English home language teacher when the school was opened by the late Nelson Mandela in 2001.
During his career at the school, he has been hailed as one of the best teachers ever to grace the school’s halls.
Good Hope Principal, Cindy Buys, said Leonard’s retirement is a great loss for the school as they are not only losing a remarkable teacher but a great mentor as well.
“Along with being a dedicated teacher, he is also a pastor which means he acted as a spiritual mentor not only to myself and the other personnel but for the learners as well.
“Perhaps one of the greatest things about him is his personality,” Cindy tells BONUS.
She describes Leonard as a unifier who has the ability to bring people together.
“We are eternally grateful for the time we had him at the school.
“He was never selfish and he leaves behind a cherished legacy. He has worked hard over the years and the time has come for him to get some well-deserved rest. We wish him the best for his future endeavours,” she continues.
Good Hope Deputy Principal, John le Roux, says Leonard’s retirement is a sad loss and comes at a time when experienced and extroadinary teachers such as him are needed in the country.
“It is difficult to see someone like Leonard leave. He has vast experience in the teaching field and he taught a scarce skill. It is always good to meet people yet difficult to part ways after they have made such a positive impact on your life. His passion and admiration as a teacher is an inspiration to all. I wish him the best for his retirement,” he says.
After 15 long and wonderful years at Good Hope, Leonard is saying goodbye to his family. “This school has become my family and it is sad to say goodbye. I have learned a lot from my colleagues and the learners, especially Cindy who has been not only a great leader but a sister and mentor to me. My heart bleeds because I will miss each and everyone here but I will never forget the impact they have made on my life,” Leonard concludes.
