11 killed after vehicle rolls into oncoming traffic on N1 South

One of the vehicles involved was transporting 13 learners, says the department

LIMPOPO – Eleven people died after a sedan and a heavy motor vehicle crashed on Sunday evening.

According to a statement issued by the Department of Transport, the accident happened on the N1 South near the Nyl Plaza at around 19:20 on Sunday.

“It is alleged the driver of a the sedan, who was transporting 13 learners, lost control and rolled when the tyre burst. The vehicle rolled into the oncoming traffic lane and collided with a heavy motor vehicle and caught fire,” said the department.

Ten people traveling in the sedan were killed instantly and one later passed away at the hospital said Police Spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

The deceased were burnt beyond recognition he added.

The truck driver sustained injuries on his legs as was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment, said Ngoepe.

A case of culpable homicide is being investigated and forensic investigations to determine their ages and identities of the deceased will be conducted by the Saps Forensic Unit from Pretoria, he concluded.
