Villiers’ murder suspect (25) shoots himself

The suspect, believed to be the son-in-law of the murdered farmer, was cornered by police after a high speed chase

LIMPOPO – Police have made a major breakthough following the murder of Bertie Villiers (54), who was attacked in his home at a small holding outside of Thabazimbi on Friday, says the police.

Villiers body was discovered by his son on Friday laying on the floor in the kitchen. He has sustained several gunshot wounds were several spent cartridges were found lying next to the body.

According to Police Spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe, following up on information recieved about the whereabouts of a suspect wanted in connection in the case, the police together with the Rustenburg Flying Squad chased the suspect down during a high speed car chase along the Sun City road in the Rustenburg area in the North West Province yesterday (Saturday).

“When the suspect was cornered and pulled off the road, he allegedly shot himself in the head with the firearm believed to be the one used during the murder of Villiers,” said Ngoepe.

Ngoepe added: “The suspect who sustained serious injuries was taken to the hospital for medical treatment under police guard.”

“The police are investigating the possibility that the vehicle the suspect was driving is similar to the white VW Jetta that was seen near the scene of the murder.”

A 7.65 Astra pistol firearm was confiscated and our preliminary investigations have revealed that the suspect, is the son-in-law of the deceased.

The suspect will appear before Thabazimbi Magistrate Court as soon as he recover from the Hospital concluded Ngoepe.

Police investigations are still continuing.
