Cash in transit robbery foiled, three in custody

One of the three suspects has been linked to the Anisah Moosa kidnapping earlier this year, according to Moosa family’s spokesperson, anti-crime activist Yusuf Abramjee

LIMPOPO: Three suspects, aged 27, 32 and 33, are in custody in connection with a foiled cash-in-transit robbery in Jane Furse outside Lebowakgomo yesterday afternoon (Saturday).

According to statement issued by Police Spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe,  G4S AV security company personnel who were collecting cash from businesses at a local shopping mall were apparently their target.

Police members from the Tracking Unit and Tactical Response Team (TRT) were following up on lead about a possible cash-in-transit robbery in the area when the air unit spotted the suspected vehicle,  and attempted to stop the suspects, said Ngoepe.

When the suspects started shooting at the police, the members returned fire, injuring two of the suspects, he added.

“The two injured suspects were arrested and taken to the hospital. No police member was injured but several of the suspects managed to escape during the shoot-out.”

An AK 47 assault rifle with one magazine and 8 rounds of ammunition, a 9mm pistol and a vehicle that was earlier hijacked at Bushbuckridge in the Mpumalanga Province were confiscated during the arrest said Ngoepe.

A third suspect later handed himself in at Polokwane Police Station.

“One of the arrested suspects was found to linked to a kidnapping and attempted murder case in in Polokwane and the other is connected to several cases of hijacking.”

Meanwhile police foiled another cash-in-transit robbery in Tzaneen on 28 November where suspects were arrested and  firearms and a vehicle seized.

All the arrested suspects will be charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, possession of stolen vehicle and possession of illegal firearms and ammunition. Police investigations continue and more arrests are expected.
