The voice of women-in-taxis

Re-elected Provincial Chairperson of FELLDTA Women's League, Hulisani Grace Netshiozwi, is a woman on a mission to implement change in the taxi industry to make it more accessible for women

LIMPOPO – Since Hulisani Grace Netshiozwi and Joyce Malau’s entry into the taxi industry, women’s voices started to reverberate from key decision-making boardrooms alongside their male counterparts.

Netshiozwi, was re-elected as Provincial Chairperson of the Federated Local and Long Distance Taxi Association (FELLDTA) Women’s League, while Malau retained he position as league secretary.

The duo was elected alongside Deputy Chairperson Flora Motshweng, Deputy Secretary, Flora Mokgakane and Public Relations Officer, Meriam Moumakwe.

The launch of the women’s league under the auspices of FELLDTA could be the ideal and long-awaited lifeline women operators have been waiting for.

Netshiozwi joined the taxi industry in 2003 and has earned a myriad of plaudits from those under her leadership.

As chairperson of FELLDTA, her priority would be to spearhead transformation and the much-sought gender recognition in the male-dominated public transport business.

“There is a lot of hard work that needs to be done in this industry. We are on a learning curve and we hope that in due course, we will be on the right track. It’s only a matter of time. All this will be possible if we as women work together to a single goal – to make the taxi industry a viable business,” she said.

“As women we have no voice in this industry, it’s a man’s world. However, with federations like FELLDTA giving us a platform to raise issues affecting us, we strongly believe that there is light at the end of this dark tunnel,” Moumakwe concluded.
