Gogos grow veggies for community

Through the project, the elderly find innovative ways to stay busy and earn extra income

TZANEEN – A group of elderly and disadvantaged people have toiled tirelessly to tend to a fresh produce garden which provides much needed vegetables to residents of Lenyenye township.

The Moriri o Moshweu project is the lifeblood of many families in the community who both depend on and support the project.

Several working class people volunteer their services selling the fruits and vegetables.

One of the residents, Ronald Maake, says he no longer has to travel to town to buy the vegetables he needs since the project began.

“There are many families here that depend on social grants and when I buy something from the project, I know I have made a contribution to bettering their lives,” Maake explains. “Before the project, many of the elderly residents did not have employment and didn’t have anything to pass the time with. Most of them are still physically fit so it was a shame for them to simply sit around and wait for their grants every month.

“The little money they make through the project helps them supplement their income and support their families.”

Ward 31 councillor, Justice Modipa, said: “We strongly support this initiative because many of our people depend on the Moriri project for vegetables, herbs and fruits. Although it might not always be easy for the elderly to wake up early every day and go to work, they take pride in their contribution and are committed to the project”.
