Police investigates death of boy (4), arson attack

The Police in Mecklenburg outside Burgersfort have launched a manhunt for a group responsible for setting alight the homes of three families

LIMPOPO – The Police in Mecklenburg outside Burgersfort have launched a manhunt for a group responsible for setting alight the homes of three families.

It is alleged that on Monday, 7 November at approximately 19:00, residents from Ga-Mpheti village torched three homes in the area after the occupants of these homes attempted to collect funds to pay for the consultation of a traditional healer.

These residents knocked on doors asking for a R10 donation. They planned to pay a traditional healer to find out what caused the death of a four-year-old boy who went missing but was later found dead near a waterhole in the area. This apparently infuriated a group of residents who burned down the homes of the residents collecting the funds.

An inquest docket was opened to investigate the matter and while the cause of death has not been identified, police are confident the post mortem report will shed light on the matter.

No arrests in either the death of the child or the torching of the homes have been made and police investigations are ongoing.

Provincial Commissioner LT. General Nneke Ledwaba says he is disappointed by the conduct of the community and he condemned their actions with strong words.

The General further reiterated the call for members to refrain from taking the law into their own hands because it damages the spirit of Community Policing.

Community members are therefore requested to be calm and give the police space to investigate the incident.

Community members are requested to assist the police in identifying the perpetrators in this crime.
