Local tavern owner’s wife in dock for murder, attempted murder

The case against the 39-year-old wife of a Westenburg tavern owner has been remanded to 14 November for a formal bail application

POLOKWANE – The case against the 39-year-old wife of a Westenburg tavern owner has been remanded to 14 November for a formal bail application following the alleged shooting of two brothers, one of which died, on Sunday morning.

Joan Phiri, who faces the charges of murder and attempted murder, appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Tuesday).

Police received report at around 01:10 that morning of an armed robbery at a tavern in Extention 44. On arrival at the scene, it was reported that Phiri had allegedly shot two suspected robbers, twin brothers from the area.

According to Police Spokesperson, L T. Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe: “One of the brothers, Livi Nare (30), died at the scene and the other was wounded and taken to hospital in critical condition.”

Ngoepe stated the Westenburg Police are still investigating the damage of property and alleged mob justice following the alleged shooting incident where a crowd gathered outside the tavern owner’s property and attacked the family.

“They trapped them inside the building and attempted to burn them by setting the properties alight,” Ngoepe said.

The victim’s house, tavern and three vehicles were torched during the incident.  Three state vehicles were also damaged.

Police investigations continue.
