Minister of Basic Education addresses media about leaked exam

Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga shed light on the findings of the department’s ongoing preliminary investigation of the Mathematics Paper 2 leak

POLOKWANE – Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, held a press briefing with the media in Polokwane on Friday, 4 November to shed light on the findings of the department’s ongoing preliminary investigation of the Mathematics Paper 2 leak that came to light a week ago.

The department released a statement confirming several learners had access to a Gr 12 Mathematics Paper 2 question paper before the exam was to be written.

“We have commenced with our investigations and we have engaged the services of the Hawks. We have also opened a case with the South African Police Services,” Motshekga said.

The preliminary findings are as follows:

  • A copy of the question paper, which was not in the exact same format as the final examination paper was received by one candidate who is a learner at Giyani High School. The learner has come forward and made this confession voluntarily and he has made a full disclosure which is extremely helpful in taking the investigation forward.
  • Other learners from the school have also come forward and admitted to having received the question paper from a Whatsapp chat group, on their cell phones.
  • The question paper did not have the features of the final examination paper but the contents and sequence of the questions were the same as the final question paper.
  • At this stage, the leak could be limited to selected learners in the one school and a few learners from neighbouring schools. The minister said she is deeply shocked and saddened by the leak. A Ministerial Investigation Team has been appointed and must report back to the minister in six weeks on the rest of their investigation.

The fate of the learners implicated in the leak is not yet known.
