SANRAL urges motorists to prepare for N1 closure

The timeline for the construction, will be phased as follows:

MOKOPANE – Motorists should take note that traffic on the N1 between Mokopane and Polokwane will drastically increase from 9 November due to demolition of the existing “Hotel” bridge linking the R101 with local farms and the Protea Hotel.
The South African National Roads Agency (SOC) Ltd (SANRAL) would like to notify the public and road users of road closures around Polokwane as the structure will be demolished by means of blasting.
The traffic travelling north from Nyl Plaza will be diverted onto the R101 towards Polokwane.
The N1 will be closed from the Roodepoort N1 intersection where the traffic will be diverted onto the R101, thus the N1 from Nyl plaza to the Roodepoort intersection will be closed for traffic on 9 November.
The timeline for 9 November , will be phased as follows:
• 07:00 – divert traffic from Nyl plaza onto the R101
• 07:00 – divert traffic from Roodepoort, N1 Intersection onto the R101
• 08:45 – close R101 600m on either side of the bridge
• 09:00 – demolish the bridge structure using explosives and inspection
• 09:10 – open the R101 for traffic.
• 09:10 to18:00 – clearing the N1 of rubble
• 18:00 – open the N1 for traffic.
As numerous lives have been claimed in accidents on this part of the N1 the patience and co-operation of motorists will be appreciated during this time. SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience caused and thanks you for your patience during the construction period. The Agency seriously takes it’s mandate from government to manage and maintain the national road network. In so doing, the safety and well being of road users and the communities in which it operates are paramount.
