Water provision is mayor’s priority

Newly inaugurated mayor says she will not tolerate corruption or laziness of municipal officials.

VHEMBE – According to Vhembe District Mayor, Florence Radzlani, it is the primary role of local government to create a decent living environment and to address basic services to the communities they are serving.

She said the municipality will tackle water shortage in communities with reverence.

“As a start, we are repairing existing and dysfunctional boreholes and equipping those without equipment. We also understand that our communities want better roads, installation of electricity, refuse removal and decent housing and it is our job to address these challenges,” the mayor said.

Radzilani spoke during a media briefing on Monday, after she delivered her acceptance speech at her inauguration  on Saturday.

“Any municipality that has excuses for addressing these challenges is simply not doing its job. While we accept that there will be glitches at times, it still remains our responsibility as public representatives to go back to the people to explain this,” she added.

“Gone are the days of tolerating corruption and laziness in the municipal administration. Our councillors in the Vhembe region must commit to holding officials accountable by ensuring there is good financial management and that none of our municipalities obtain either a disclaimer or an adverse audit opinion,” she said.
