Taxi violence leaves one dead, several injured

The situation is still tense and extra Public Order Policing members have been deployed to the Maake area - police

LIMPOPO – Police in Maake outside Tzaneen have launched a manhunt for a group of suspects involved in taxi-violence that claimed the life of a queue Marshall in Lorraine village this morning (Monday).

It is alleged that two taxi associations, Letaba and Oaks, are fighting over routes from Mertz to Tzaneen and Johannesburg.

The violence was incited when one person was shot and injured at De Oaks filling station at the weekend; in reaction to the shooting incident, Letaba Taxi Association members descended on Lorraine village where they assaulted community members and a queue Marshall of the Oaks Taxi Association. The Marshall was severely beaten and died at the scene of the assault.

According to a statement issued by LT. Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe, one person is dead and several others injured but no arrests have been made.

“The situation is still tense but we are deploying more members, including the POP, to deal with it,” Ngoepe said.

Police investigations are continuing.
