Polokwane residents urged to use water sparingly amid heatwave

The Polokwane Municipality is calling on residents to use water sparingly, as the reservoirs continue to drop.

POLOKWANE – As heatwave conditions continue over northern South Africa, temperatures aren’t expected to cool down for the rest of the week, although rain is expected reports South African Weather Service.

Residents are being advised to keep cool, but not be tempted to use water carelessly due to the current water crisis.

It is advisable to stay indoors or under shade during a heat wave. However, municipal pools at Westernburg, Seshego and Nirvana are open between 10:00 and 18:00 for those who may wish to cool off in this fashion. Entrance to these pools is at R12 per person.

During this period, those who have swimming pools in their homes are advised not to refill their pools. Watering of gardens and lawns is also prohibited.

Reservoir levels are still very low and careless usage of water will collapse the system resulting in water shortages.

The following tips can be followed when temperatures soars to over 35 degrees:
1. Wear light weight clothes
2. Stay indoors or under shades. Stay away from the sun between 11am and 3pm.
3. Use spray or water bottle to spray your face (not hosepipes)
4. Place a wet cold cloth on your neck.
5. Shut windows and pull down the shades when it is hotter outside. You can open the windows for ventilation when it is cooler.
6. Avoid drinking alcohol as it will dehydrate you.
