0% fee hike a welcome move – TUT students

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) university management has announced there will be no fee increase for the 2017 academic year and classes are expected to resume promptly.

POLOKWANE – This comes after weeks of protest action by students in the popular #FeesMustFall campaign following the announcement made by Minister of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande, that tuition fees for 2017 will increase by no more than 8%.

The TUT council had a special meeting on Monday 24 October, where the decision for a 0% fee increase was made.

Review spoke to several students on campus regarding this announcement and this is what they had to say:

Tumelo Moaga, Student Representative Council (SRC) President of TUT Polokwane Campus explained what ‘no fee adjustment’ means for students like him.

TUT Spokesperson, Willa de Ruyter, confirmed that management did agree on a 0% fee increment for the 2017 academic year. She said: “The university and the institutional SRC signed a memorandum of agreement to confirm no student will pay any fee adjustment next year.
“They also agreed that financially needy and academically deserving students will not be excluded based on historic debt”.
De Ruyter outlined that students will now return to classes to ensure the current academic year ends smoothly.
Students may also write any tests missed during the protest action. The #FeesMustFall campaigns have been going on for a while now with students clashing with police on a number of occasions. Some of the universities will be forced to repair property that was destroyed during the campaign. Read more: No fees hike for TUT students
