Kidnap saga: warrant of arrest issued for accused

A warrant of arrest has been issued for one of the accused in the Berdine Jordaan kidnapping case.

POLOKWANE – According to Provincial Spokesperson for the Hawks, Capt, Matimba Maluleke, Leon du Preez (34) who is currently out on bail failed to attend his scheduled court appearance on Tuesday 25 October.

“The Polokwane Magistrate’s Court has issued a warrant of arrest for Du Preez which will stand over until his next court appearance on 11 November. His bail has been provisionally forfeited to the state,” Maluleke adds.

Du Preez was arrested in August on charges of kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice following investigation into the reported kidnapping of Jordaan and a 14-year-old victim a month earlier.

Jordaan (29) was arrested on 27 July after a police investigation led authorities to Musina where she, her 5-year-old daughter and a 14-year-old girl were found hiding in a cupboard in a house.

“She was questioned and it was discovered that she was the one who kidnapped the 14-year-old girl,” Maluleke confirmed.

Du Preez is currently out on R2000 bail.  Jordaan, who faces charges of defeating the ends of justice, kidnapping and perjury, is also out on bail and will appear with Du Preez on 11 November.
