Local court hands down 20 years jail for rapist

He dragged her to a nearby sport field were he raped her, says the police

POLOKWANE – The Regional Court in Mankweng outside the city has sentenced a 29-year-old man from Nobody to 20 years imprisonment without fine for the rape of an 18-year-old girl.

According to reports the accused Lebogang Sammy Mogale met the victim who was on the way home from the tavern at about 00:30 on 24 August 2014. He dragged her to the nearby sport field and raped her.

“After hearing the victims screams of help members of the community came to rescue and he was arrested immediately,” said Provincial Police Spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

Meanwhile the Regional Court in Ritavi outside Tzaneen four suspects have been sentenced to a consolidated period of 52 years for four separate incidents of rapes , assault with grievous bodily harm and attempted murder as follows:

  • Khami Jan Rikhotso (28) from Petanenge village was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment without fine for rape, attempted murder and assault GBH.
  • Tebogo Lebepe (20) from Mokgoloboto village was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment without fine for rape.
  • Happy Machimana (24) from Khujwana village was sentenced to 7 years imprisonment without fine for rape and
  • Tshepo David Shai (20) from Makgaung village in the Maake Policing area outside Tzaneen was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment without fine for rape.

The Provincial Commissioner Lt General Nneke Jim Ledwaba has welcomed the sentences handed down to the accused and has commended the team of investigators from the Tzaneen Cluster FCS Unit for the job well done.

The General has warned all criminals that crime does not pay. “Refrain from these unscrupulous acts, if not, you will follow your friends as above.
