A common problem drivers in the busier areas of Polokwane face is other drivers misusing their hazard lights to park in the middle of the road.

This is a common sight in streets like Landdros Maré and Grobler Street.

These reckless drivers usually misuse their hazard lights in order to wait for parking spaces to open up, drop someone off, answer their phone or to speak to other drivers.

According to roadsafety.co.za, drivers may only use their hazard lights when their vehicle is in a stationary, hazardous position or in motion due to an emergency situation. The lights may not be used under any other circumstances.

Review spoke to a local traffic official who stated a driver can be fined up to R1 000 for misusing their hazard lights or parking on an illegal area.

Do you think the penalty should be more or less severe for drivers who misuse their hazard lights?
