Waterwise gardens with Lizzy Altenroxel

POLOKWANE – It remains important to use water wisely especially when it comes to gardens.

Owner of Greener Tidings nursery in Polokwane, Lizzy Altenroxel, explains how you can do your part in saving water when it comes to  gardens.

Whether you have an existing garden or are planning to create a new garden, opt for a ‘dry garden’ or ‘waterwise’ garden.

Greener Tidings is an advocate of dry gardens or waterwise gardens and they suggest planting vygies, aloes and succulents which not only saves water but also time due to them having very little to no maintenance. Dry gardens can be made by using stones and paving blocks of various colours along with bird baths and feeders, and other garden ornaments.

“A waterwise garden is one of the most colourful and rewarding winter and spring gardens and looks great with little to no maintenance or watering all year around,” Altenroxel said.

She explained many residents are reducing lawns and replacing water-thirsty plants and gardens into waterwise gardens.

“The water problems in the city and the province will not be resolved soon due to the drought which means we should all do our part in saving water by creating waterwise gardens. These gardens provide the best colour and need no water at all. Add some pebbles, pots or bird baths for a bit of texture and contrast.”
