Local trust strives to rehabilitate school damaged in demarcation clashes

Matsila Trust is in talks with various donors to assist in rehabilitating a primary school in Elim

LIMPOPO – Hope has been restored for teachers and learners of Mariadze Primary School in Mashau village near Elim courtesy of Matsila Community Development Trust.

The trust is engaged in talks with donors to assist in rehabilitating the school after computers and other important documentation were destroyed when arsonists set the school’s administration block alight amid the demarcation clash earlier this year. Mariadze is one of 31 schools that were damaged during the protests.

Director of the trust, Chief Livhuwani Nkhiphitheni Matsila says they need to rebuild the school’s administration block and kitchen. “We need funds to get things back to the way they were for the 500 learners at the school,” he said. “We have a new plan for the admin block and have already roped in Gift of the Givers for help,” he continued.

Spokesperson for the Limpopo Department of Education, Dr Naledzani Rasila says the MEC for Education invited King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana to a Matric Examination count-down launch in Vuwani. He says the campaign is aimed at encouraging different stakeholders including learners, to work hard in their preparations for the final examinations.

“Final examinations across the country start on 24 October and will end on 29 November 2016. During the launch, district task teams will assist under performing schools. The aim of the teams is to give these schools a “final push” before the end of the school year. The province is ready to produce improved results compared to the previous year,” Rasila said.

Venda King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana said: “The Vhembe district is known for producing quality results at the end of the year and I don’t want that to change. Let us protect our schools because education is the future,” Ramabulana said.
