Freemasons reach out to help those in need

"This donation forms part of several donations which we plan to hand over to charity organisations in the city to show that we care about our community" - Ivan Wilkinson

POLOKWANE – As part of their community projects, the Freemasons English Constitution reached out to the Polokwane Nasorgsentrum and Meals on Wheels in a bid to help those who help the needy in their community.

Ivan Wilkinson from the Freemasons visited the Polokwane Nasorgsentrum last Thursday, and Meals on Wheels on Tuesday where he donated two vouchers to the value of R2 000 each to the centres which they can use at Thornhill Spar in the city to help meet some of their daily needs.

“This donation forms part of several donations which we plan to hand over to charity organisations in the city to show that we care about our community. We are happy to help organisations that go out of their way to help the destitute and less fortunate in their communities and the Polokwane Nasorgsentrum and Meals on Wheels are shining examples of such organisations,” Ivan said.

The Polokwane Nasorgsentrum is a private initiative that takes care of people with mental disabilities. Because they are a private institution, they do not get any subsidies from government and rely heavily on donations.

Saartjie du Toit is the House Mother of the centre and said: “It feels like Christmas in October. It is not an easy task to cover all our expenses but it warms our hearts when people like the Freemasons give us a helping hand. We are greatly thankful for these donations”.

Meals on Wheels is a non-profit organisation that makes meals for the poor, elderly and the less fortunate.

They make use of the kitchen and facilities at the Seventh Day Adventist Church to make the meals which they then deliver to those in need in the community.

Currently they deliver more than 1 700 meals per week.

Meals on Wheels Manager, secretary and chef, Cheryl Gibson, could not thank the Freemasons enough for their donation.

“This donation will go a long way in helping the needy in the community and we are at a loss for words to fully express our thanks. Thank you for enabling us to help the needy in the community, we greatly appreciate the donation,” Cheryl said.
