LIMPOPO – Members of the Heritage Protection Group (HPG) are investigating two separate incidents in which it is alleged that four poachers shot and dehorned three rhinos on a farm in Melkrivier.
According to Ben Engelbrecht of the HPG, they believe one of the rhinos was shot on Sunday and the poachers used a saw to cut off his horn. The other two rhinos were presumably shot on Tuesday evening and both their horns were chopped off with an axe. Engelbrecht reports that the dehorning took place less than a kilometer apart.
Engelbrecht concluded, stating “We followed four sets of footprints to a gravel road from where the suspects fled in a vehicle. Investigations are ongoing.”
