Starlet shares her craft with her community

Famous SA actress wants to share her tricks of the TV trade with the youth of her hometown, Louis Trichardt

LIMPOPO – Well known actress Miilicent Makhado, a familiar face for Muvhango and Scandal! fans, will host the Masase Cultural and Drama Festival in Madombidzha, Louis Trichardt and Makhado on 22 October.

Founder of the Solbent Project, Makhado says the youth should not undermine their culture as it is a way for people to express themselves and tell stories in a magical way.

The Solbent Project is a non-profit organisation (NPO) and was established in 2007 through a partnership with the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC) in Limpopo.

She explains the integration of arts and culture has played a huge role in her life and it is something she wants every South African citizen to embrace as it is part of their identity. One of the main focuses of the project is performing arts as it teaches both primary and high school learners skills in performing arts, directing, script writing and producing among others.

Makhado says her passion for education and the performing arts has led her to partner with the DAC on her project to make education and skills development more accessible to rural communities in Venda.

“Together with the DAC, Solbent looks to award learners interested in pursuing a career in performing arts with bursaries and funding,” Makhado explains.

She adds that they are giving schools such as Kutama Sinthumule in Makhado/Louis Trichardt priority as she wants to share the knowledge she has gained from television and performing arts schools with the youth from her hometown.

“My aim is to show children from underprivileged backgrounds that performing arts is a lucrative career that they should consider when choosing what to study,” she says.
