#ULShutdown lifted: classes to resume next week

The university cannot afford to lose any more time with regard to studies- Vice Chancellor and Principal, Mahlo Mokgalong

LIMPOPO – All academic activities at the University of Limpopo will resume on Wednesday, 12 October.

This comes after classes were suspended and students were sent home following violent clashes at the campus. The protests were sparked by the popular #FeesMustFall campaign which has universities across South Africa in its grip.

Student residences are set to re-open on Tuesday, 11 October from 12:00.

According to a statement issued by Vice Chancellor and Principal, Mahlo Mokgalong, the academic calendar for the year will be re-scheduled to accommodate the time lost during the protests. “At this juncture, management makes a profound appeal to students to use the remainder of this academic year productively and apply themselves diligently to ensure their success. Should this opportunity to complete the academic programme be lost, the consequences may be far reaching and dire,” Mokgalong said.

He added that the university cannot afford to lose any more time with regard to studies.

This comes shortly after all political structures at the University of Limpopo handed over a memorandum to the University management demanding the university should open on 6 October and academic activities should commence on 10 October.

“We have come to realise that students want to continue with their studies and that is why we requested the university open its doors again,” said Joan Maluleka, outgoing Secretary of the Student Representative Council (SRC).

The memorandum also requested there be no fee increment this year and the following year. Read more here> Clock ticking for UniLim management
