Armed robbery attempt at mall foiled

Quick reaction from the mall security and the police prevented an armed robbery from taking place at Mall of the North yesterday (Thursday) afternoon.

POLOKWANE – “We can confirm that there was an attempted robbery at the MTN store in the mall. Three armed male suspects and one female carrying a large bag were involved. No further details available at this time,”says Polokwane police Spokesperson Capt Ntobeng Phala.

Phala further added that he believes the robbery attempt was unsuccessful due to the quick reaction from Mall security and the police.

No arrests and police investigations continue he concludes.

Mall management are currently in a meeting and will  give comment at a later stage.

This follows a recent robbery at the Telkom store in the mall where suspects managed to get away with over R600 000 stolen goods.

Brig Mojapelo, from the South African Police Service said the suspects fled the scene with 20 Huawei, 20 iPhones, 20 Samsung S7 Edge cellphones and four Routes to the value of R666 400.

Jurgens Nel, Mall security manager, said according to eye-witnesses and the Mall’s CCTV Footage no firearms were visible during the robbery.
