Thembi Nkadimeng, Polokwane Executive Mayor is adamant that the outstanding debts of the municipality should be recovered as a matter of urgency and will not hesitate to have the services of defaulters terminated.
Addressing the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) Representative Forum at the Nirvana Community Hall last Thursday, Nkadimeng said that she is disappointed that representatives of the sector departments did not attend the meeting, as she had a message for them.
“The municipality will not hesitate to terminate the supply of services to government and provincial departments that are in default and that applies to all consumers. I give them 14 days to comply. Consumers that have queries on their accounts are invited to visit our offices but are still obliged to pay at least their monthly accounts while matters are investigated,” Nkadimeng advised and added that the municipality could raise R200 million from outstanding debts that can be used to enhance service delivery.
Acting Communications and Marketing Manager of the municipality Matshidiso Mothapo reported that Nkadimeng had a meeting with residents of the Ga-Rena Rental Village last Thursday evening to discuss their outstanding rental and services accounts and confirmed that the municipality has agreed with the residents that if their current accounts are not settled within 14 days, services will be terminated.
In a report that was tabled in the council meeting last Wednesday, it was stated that debtors owed the municipality R729 550 265 at the end of August of which an amount of R602 813 000 is outstanding for more than 90 days.
