Pools of water at dept anger residents

'The rule that no one is allowed to water their garden stands for residents and municipal departments alike'

POLOKWANE – The municipality is calling on residents to use water sparingly as the water levels of the reservoirs that supply water to the city are critically low.

Watering your garden is strictly prohibited and offenders will have to pay a fine of R1000.

It therefore came as a shock to a number of residents when they saw water running down Vermikuliet Street. Angry residents immediately contacted Review Offices  as it appeared the lawn of the traffic department was being watered.

Municipal Spokesperson, Matshidiso Mothapo says according to a report they received, there is a leak in the irrigation system at the traffic department which led to the water spilling over and into the street. He says the problem has been identified and is being fixed.

“The rule that no one is allowed to water their garden stands for residents and municipal departments alike. We sent out an internal notice in June stating no department may water their gardens/ lawns, regardless of whether they make use of boreholes. We’ve also asked residents with boreholes not to water their gardens and to use water sparingly. The municipality takes this issue very seriously and are taking steps to ensure residents adhere to the rule.

Residents are reminded the situation is critical and they should therefore use water for household purposes only.

Water levels as on Tuesday, 4 October:

  • Krugersburg 50Ml reservoir – 40%;
  • 30Ml reservoir – 34%;
  • Potgieterstraat – 37%;
  • Extension 34 – 70% and
  • Seshego – 29%.
