Water restrictions in affected areas to be implemented with immediate effect – CDM

Capricorn District Municipality (CDM) appeals to households in affected areas to limit water usage to immediate household needs.

POLOKWANE – Residents in Polokwane are being assured that they will be notified of any water restrictions that might be implemented, before they happen.

This comes after a statement was issued by the Capricorn District Municipality (CDM) notifying residents of water restrictions that are being implemented to prevent water shortages as a result of lack of rains and drought. The Ministry of Water and Sanitation and Lepelle Northern Water issued a warning about low dam water levels, drought and implementation of water restrictions on Wednesday morning.

In implementing these restrictions, CDM will reduce the supply of portable water by 30% for domestic usage and by 55% and 100% for mining usage and agriculture respectively in Lepelle Nkumpi and surrounding areas such as Zebediela and parts of Mphahlele. The restrictions are with immediate effect and the effect will be seen with decreased water pressure until the target is achieved. The restrictions will automatically be lifted as and when the situation improves.

CDM therefore appeals to households in affected areas to limit water usage to immediate household needs such as drinking, cooking and bathing. If these restrictions are not adhered to, dams and reservoirs will run dry and households will experience severe water shortages.

CDM Media Liason Officer, Moffat Senyatsi says that should the water restrictions currently being experienced country wide reach Polokwane, the municipality will notify residents timeously.
