Officer traps, arrests suspect in bathroom during attempted robbery

The police once again appeal to all business owners and residents to be alert at all times

MOKOPANE – A suspect was caught red handed during an attempted robbery at a Building in Ruiter Street on Wednesday morning.

Arno Bronkhorst a reaction-officer of Suricat Armed Response told Bosveld the suspect gained access to the shop through the roof and then failed to get out again.

“Someone heard a noise inside the store and contacted the owner who then phoned the control room. I rushed to the scene and caught the suspect inside the bathroom and handed him over to the police.”

Mokopane Police are still investigating two separate robberies which took place on Sunday. The first incident took place at a clothing store in Thabo Mbeki Drive and the second incident where an ATM was targetted in Retief Street.

Two armed robbers targeted a clothing store in Thabo Mbeki Drive on Sunday morning and fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

Mokopane Police Spokesperson Sgt Irene Masingi reported that the two men entered the shop at around 10:20 and locked the employees and a security guard in the storeroom.

They further demanded the key to the safe and stole an undisclosed amount of money.

“No shots were fired and no arrests have been made yet,” Masingi said.

On the same day suspects attempted to break into an ATM in Retief Street. The alarm was activated and the police rushed to the scene.

According to Sgt Irene Masingi: “When the police arrived on the scene the suspects had already fled. They didn’t’ manage to steal anything and left the tools they used to gain access behind.

The total costs of damages done by the perpetrators amounts to R50 000. Investigations are ongoing.”

These incidents follow only a week after a spate of robberies hit Mokopane.

The police once again appeal to all business owners and residents to be alert at all times and for anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of these perpetrators to come forth.
