SPCA inspector warns: theft of donkeys on the increase

Donkeys are being slaughtered inhumanely and illegally for their hides.

LIMPOPO – There has been an increase in the number of reports of donkeys being stolen in Limpopo for illegal slaughter said Inspector Matome Semenya from the National SPCA.

Working donkeys are valuable animals as they support families in collecting water, wood, food and supplies and in transporting people to clinics and to collect grants.

When donkeys are stolen this can have a devastating effect on the family who relies on these donkeys.

Semenya expressed concern that stolen donkeys from communities were being slaughtered inhumanely and illegally for their hides.

Donkey owners have a role to play in ensuring they inspect their donkeys every day to ensure they are safe.

If owners put their donkeys into kraals at night to keep them safe he also reminds owners to ensure they have water provided especially during this drought.

He urged all community members to be aware of this and to report any suspicious activities to their nearest Police Station.

Anyone with information about this crime can also contact him at the National SPCA offices on 011 907 3590/1.
