[NOT FOR SENSITIVE VIEWERS] Six more lions found poisoned

Police are investigating cases of malicious damage to property after six lions were poisoned in the Groblersdal area, Limpopo on Sunday evening.

POLOKWANE – According to police, two male and two female lions were found poisoned and left for dead on a farm alongside the Loskop road outside Groblersdal.

According to Acting Groblersdal Police Spokesperson, Constable Julia Mampa, security guards at the farm were put on high alert when electricity supply to the farm was disturbed that evening.

“When the guards searched the grounds, they found four lions poisoned, two of which later died. One male and one female survived after they received medical treatment. Thankfully, none of the affected lions on the farm had body parts removed,” Mampa confirmed.

She added that they were informed of two lions that were killed at Mbidi Lodge in the Groblersdal area while attending to the incident of the poisoned lions.

“The two white lions killed at the Mbidi Lodge had their heads and paws removed. We suspect they were poisoned before they were killed. Preliminary investigations showed the perpetrators jumped over a fence from a nearby tree to get access into the lions’ cage,” Mampa explained.

No arrests have been made and police investigations are ongoing.
