‘Illegal connections’ have left community taps running dry

Residents of Koena Moloto in Seshego in Polokwane are up in arms over Zimbabwean nationals who own brick fields in the area.

POLOKWANE – They claim brick yard owners connect water pipes illegally and misuse water intended for South Africans.

According to one of the residents, they reported the matter to the Polokwane Municipality over two years ago but nothing has been done about the issue since then.

“Certain areas of Koena Moloto do not have water at all due to their illegal connections. These people use a lot of water daily while we struggle to get enough water to bath, drink and flush our toilets,” the resident explained.

Another resident said foreign nationals get water for free while South Africans have to pay rates and taxes.

“We are tired of these people and it seems as if the government doesn’t plan on doing anything about our struggles. We are forced to buy water and use buckets to flush our toilets because of these greedy people.”

She further said they confronted the brick yard owners but they were unmoved. She concluded by saying the only solution they have now is to remove these people by force.

Desiree Manyane, Polokwane Municipality Stakeholder Relations Officer said people should open a criminal case against anyone who connects water illegally and they should also report the matter to the municipality. “We urge residents to use water wisely and advise against connecting water pipes illegally as the repercussions are not pleasant,” Manyane said.

Call the municipality at (015) 2372 001/2 to report illegal connections.
